Whether it’s the Hijri or the Gregorian calendar, we all have our own resolutions for the New Year. Everyone wants to starts it afresh and hope for the best to come. Some of us achieve their goals whilst some… well, don’t achieve it. It depends on how determined you are. All of us have budget planners, establishments, aims to reach high skies of success in our career but do we actually have health resolutions? We aren’t just talking about one aspect of your health but your overall well-being.
The most difficult part is to stay determined on one’s plan. Continuity should be established and anything that creates a monotonous routine is what most of us would want to escape from. You really don’t need a monotonous routine. Your life can have excitement and you can achieve your goals at the same time. For rich and the poor, health is definitely wealth for all. So, how do we achieve this overall well-being?
Overall well-being relates to three most important factors of an individual: the physical well-being, the psychological well-being and the spiritual well-being. If care is taken for these, you are not far from attaining any of your health resolutions for the New Year. So, here is how it goes…
- Physical well-being: Needless to say, this component focuses on the “physical” you. This includes a proper 6-7 hour sleep for adults and up to 8 hours for teenagers and children, establishing a proper physical activity routine, proper eating habits, ideal weight and of course, avoiding any kind of substance abuse (includes drugs and yes, even nicotine- from my perspective). Hygiene, too, plays a vital role in maintaining good health. Did you have your annual health check-up? When was the last time you did? Besides walking, going for other physical activities such as basket ball, tennis, or anything that is fun to do is highly encouraged. As eventually, you’d do something you love the most on a regular basis compared to something that you don’t like. Blood pressure and diabetes are the most common ailments found in today’s community so it is important to maintain your health and keep a check on all aspects of it. You want to see those great-grandkids of yours, don’t you?
- Psychological well-being: I find this the toughest when I deal with people. I hear them say, “If you think I am going to forgive her, forget it! What she has done cannot be forgiven!” Now, how many times have we said that? To achieve a balanced state of psychological well-being, one needs to understand how important it is to share love and not hatred. It is essential to know that before forgiving others, there’s this popular saying that appears almost everywhere and that is, you need to forgive yourself first. No matter how worse things may be, you turn the wheel of fortune and you decide. Either you turn left where you live a life full of negativity, spread negative vibes around people and make your life miserable or you take a right turn where your life is full of optimism, spreading happiness wherever you go and make your life worth living. This requires quite a work out if you are really messed up. Counsellors and consultants are a great help here. Nevertheless, the best help one can afford is to help themselves in every way they can. With depression and self-esteem problems on the rise, experts can help you achieve the psychological satisfaction you want.
- Spiritual well-being: I feel that both psychological and spiritual well-being are connected to each other in many ways. Remembering God is the best way to get rid of any negativity, ill-feelings and hatred from your life. The most common problem that I see here is when people are not satisfied, when they don’t thank enough. They are continuously involved in the never-ending challenges of this world. Thanking God, seeking His help and enforcing your trust in Him will help you be strong and more confident about yourself and about what you do. This, in turn, will help you enforce your health resolutions for the year and make you a better person too! Spirituality connects an individual to his or her inner self. It can help you realize “your” meaning of life, “your” aspiration and what “YOU” really want. Being too materialistic these days is what our current generation is suffering from. So, refresh, revitalize and rejuvenate yourself with a spiritual life! It’s amazing to see how much of a difference it can bring in you, in a very good way. Opt for a “Be Happy” resolution this year and find yourself in a different realm of life!
Your New Year health resolutions has a better picture now- a complete individual and now, you are ready to set your health resolutions. Be it 1432 or 2011, it’s never too late to have your New Year health resolutions so, go ahead and best of luck!
